The Transition Year Programme – an overview
This is a one year optional Programme taken between Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle i.e. Year 4.
Its objectives are to:
- Facilitate a smooth transition between Junior and Senior Cycle
- Encourage personal and social development
- Recognise the need for students to grow in independence
- Foster academic achievement
- Help students prepare for Leaving Cert and working life
- What are the aims of TY?
- Education for Maturity
- Education through experience of adult and working life
- The promotion of general, technical and academic skills
- Emphasis on interdisciplinary and self-directed learning

Assessment
Assessment is continuous throughout the year and students build up a portfolio of completed work. An interview and portfolio assessment takes place at the end of the year on which they are graded. Students are issued a Certificate by the school and the Department of Education. A Graduation ceremony for students and parents take place in late May.
