Although the academic part of school life is very important, no school would be complete without a large range of extra-curricular activities. A child will make the most of their education if they are in an environment in which they feel safe – one which provides opportunities for them to develop all their abilities. Extra Curricular Activities provide students with an opportunity to develop a wide variety of skills including:
- Building Interpersonal Skills
- Teamwork
- Social Skills
- Promotes a health balanced lifestyle
- Contribute to their community
- Learning about self discipline and commitment
Our school has a rich and successful tradition both on the sports field and in many other activities such as drama and debating.
Sports
Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine is actively engaged in coaching Football, Hurling, Basketball and Athletics and participates in most of the inter-school competitions, throughout the year.
We have enjoyed great success over the years and believe that student participation in sport is an important part of their education.
We provide this with assistance from some staff and a range of outside coaches drawn from our community, including parents to whom we are very grateful.
Check the News section for updates on our progress in the many school competitions.
Arts
Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine encourages a wide range of Arts activities in the school.
Musical
The School Musical is the highlight of the school year, when we put on three performances of a full musical, in February each year. This is a huge undertaking, involving the whole school and the wider community of Kenmare and is eagerly anticipated by all.
Concerts
We hold a Variety Show on the day of the Christmas holidays each year, where students and staff enjoy some great fun. The Music Department puts on performances by the students studying Music each Spring and invites performers from the community and beyond, to come into the school for private and public performances, from time to time.
Science
We have a great record of successful entries to the BT Young Scientist competition each year.
Projects are entered in late September and students are informed by late October if they have been short-listed for the main competition in early January. Students put in a huge effort to get their projects finished by then and spend four days at the RDS in Dublin with their teachers: this is a great experience where they must present their projects to teams of judges but also has a great social aspect where they meet many students from other schools.
Debating and Public Speaking
We encourage students to practice public speaking through class debating competitions and participation in several national competitions, Concern, UCC Philosophical Society etc. and have enjoyed good success over the years.
Other opportunities arise throughout the school year and are brought to the attention of students through morning Assembly announcements and noticeboards.
