Morning Assembly
Morning Assembly takes place at 8:48 a.m. with roll call at 8:50 a.m. Students should be in school no later than 8:45 a.m. Students who are late must sign in at the Office and present a note in their Student Journal signed by a parent. A note on Compass in advance will also suffice.
Student Absence
It is vital that students attend school each day they can: there is a direct link between attendance and academic success as well as the important social interactions that school provides.
The procedure for reporting absences is as follows:
- Parents/Guardians put a note on Compass as soon as possible but at very least, before the student returns to school.
- All absent days must be accounted for: note that this may require extra notes if the absence persists.
- The student should check that this is done before they return to school.
- Parents are asked to notify the school directly if the student will be absent for an extended period, due to prolonged illness, bereavement etc.
Note that for students marked absent during the first class each morning, a notification will be sent home to parents via the Compass app. This is merely to alert you to their absence and does not require an action unless your child was sent to school, in which case we ask that you contact the school immediately.
Class Based Assessments (CBA’s) take place in Second and Third year, and it is essential that students are present for these throughout the school year. The dates will be given to students by their class teachers at the beginning of the new school year. CBA results form part of the student’s educational record and will appear on their Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement (JCPA), received after completing their Junior Cycle results.
Click here for the Second and Third Year CBA Calendars 25-26.
Holidays during Term time: the school year is short and every day counts so we respectfully ask that family holidays are taken during the school holidays. If unavoidable, please let the Year Head know well in advance.
Under the Education Welfare Act 2000 the school is required to record and account for student absences and report regularly to the Education Welfare Board (NEWB). Parents will receive communication from the school alerting them to the total number of days missed, from time to time and when there is cause for concern.
Doctors/Dental, appointments during School Hours
As far as possible, appointments, medical and other, should be made outside of class and
examination times. When necessary, the procedure is as follows:
- Permission to Leave school note is put on Compass in advance (or in the School Journal by the parent and presented to the Year Head at morning Assembly.)
- Sign out at the Office when leaving and be collected by parent/guardian.
- Sign back in at the Office on return to school.
Student Journal
All students will have a Student Journal and must have it with them at all times. As it is a valuable channel of communication between home and school, we ask parents of JC1, JC2 and JC3 to sign this book once a week. Please check it regularly for notes from teachers. Parents are requested to read the School Rules and Policies with their children. Parents are also requested to sign the Personal page to verify signatures. Student Journals are required in each class and must be kept carefully. Lost Journals must be replaced immediately and paid for by the student. The cost of replacement is €10.
School Books
All students will receive free textbooks from September 2025. They remain the property of the school and must be maintained in good condition throughout the year.
Physical Education
All students are expected to participate in Physical Education classes unless relevant medical certification is supplied. The school does not have specific requirements for P.E. clothing but recommends Navy Tracksuits/Shorts and Polo Shirts available from any shop. Non-marking runners are required for the Gym.
Medical Emergencies in school
It is school policy to take all students to a local doctor. Parents will be notified immediately.
Up to date contact details
It is essential that you provide the school with your correct postal address, email addresses and mobile phone numbers, especially if they have changed.
Jewellery
Students are only permitted to wear a stud earring in each earlobe and a watch. No other items of jewellery are allowed. This is not intended to inhibit students or make them feel unhappy. It is instead designed to avoid any confrontation in regard to certain items of jewellery. Your co-operation in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Chewing Gum
Chewing of gum is forbidden in Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine. Students found chewing gum may be asked to clean up Chewing Gum or put on Detention and/or parents contacted.
Mobile Phones
Please see our Policy section for our mobile phone policy. We will accommodate all messages and phone calls, e.g., a student who misses a bus or a lift home, forgets lunch, money, or is feeling ill is encouraged to come to the office staff and they will phone home.
Lockers
All students will be issued a locker at the start of the school year. Lockers should be closed and locked at all times. The school cannot be responsible for items that go missing from lockers. All valuables should be handed into the school office for safe keeping during the school day. Please encourage students to use their lockers wisely. Combination numbers may be changed if necessary.
Students who drive to school

School Car Park
For Health and Safety reasons parents who drive students to school are asked to drop them off in the public car park across the road, i.e. use of the school car park is not permitted except for emergencies. Please do not drop off on the main road.
Contacting Students during the School Day
If there is an urgent need to contact your son/daughter during the school day, please do so through the main school office at 064 66 40846. We would ask parents not to contact your son/daughter via mobile phone during school hours as their use is prohibited.
Visiting the School
All visitors, including parents and guardians, must report to the school office inside the main school entrance.
Procedure for addressing problems or concerns
In the course of a student’s time in school, various problems may arise. We have support structures in place to assist students and we have confidence that the majority of students feel comfortable in approaching a member of staff for assistance. In some cases however, it is necessary to bring the problem to the attention of the Principal or Deputy Principal, and Parents / Guardians should feel free to do so. A telephone call will ensure an appointment, and any problem may be discussed and dealt with confidentially.
