Pastoral Care

It is of paramount importance that every young person feels happy and safe.  Unless they do they cannot hope to fulfil their potential.  The years that the students will spend in second level education are years of phenomenal growth and development.  The students whom we welcome into first year are moving out of childhood and by the time they leave our school they are young adults!  It is crucially important that the student make a good transition from Primary school to second level.  This transition is exciting and challenging as well as daunting.  They face the task of coming to terms with a very different and larger environment, a wider range of subjects, a more complex timetable, different teachers and the challenge of making new friends.  The student experiences many new and exciting opportunities but can also experience new pressures.

Conscious of all of this, we in Pobalscoil Inbhear Sceine have put together a pastoral care programme, designed to offer support to students as they adjust to this school environment and to offer continued support as they make their way through each academic year to the Leaving Cert.

Each student will have a Class Tutor and Year Head who will keep an eye on their progress.  The Principal and Deputy Principal are also there to help in any way possible. The School Chaplain, Sr Helen, and the Guidance Counsellor, Ms Emer O’Riordan will provide support and guidance to individual students when required.  As well as this, all teachers will do everything they can to provide assistance to the student.

We have in place a mentoring system where older students help the first years to integrate into the school.  There is a Social, Personal and Health Education class on the timetable which is designed to assist with the personal development of students.

The role of Parent(s), Guardian(s) is central to our Pastoral Care Policy.  A good partnership between home and school is essential to ensure the happiness of the student.  Should any problem arise, it is vitally important that you contact the School as soon as possible.  Relevant information enables us to respond appropriately. We are very conscious of the aspect of confidentiality and the sensitivity around family information so any information will be treated most respectfully.  We offer a Spectrum programme to students who have experienced a loss in their lives through death, separation or divorce.  This can be very freeing for students and help them integrate loss in their lives.  Please encourage your son/daughter to avail of the supports the school offers.

Should you wish to meet with a member of staff, this can be arranged at a mutually convenient time by phoning the school office.
