Mentoring Programme

This school year got off to a very busy start for all those involved in our Mentoring Programme. The programme, which involves both Leaving Certificate and First Year students, aims to ensure that all first years have a good start in their new school..

Preparations for the commencement of the 2007-2008 programme began in May last year when students applied, were interviewed and were then trained in their roles. Having enjoyed the summer break, the Leaving Certificate Mentors came in and met the First Years in the afternoon of their first day in school. Regular meeting with Mentors throughout the first half term were complimented by weekly lessons in Lifeskills class focusing on the transition to second level

For many the highlight of the Mentoring programme was the cruise on Kenmare Bay. This involved all First Years, their assigned Mentors, First Year Class Tutors, Mrs. Oonagh Comerford, Ms. Dianne Kelleher and Mr. Aidan McCarthy and their Yearhead Mrs. Majella Murphy. This proved to be a very exciting trip for all!

Our school Mentoring Progamme has proved that it is indeed worthwhile. Mentors felt it gave First Years a chance to ask questions and address any concerns they may have, thereby ensuring that problems did not build up.

As we slowly move into our last term we acknowledge the dedication and commitment that the Mentors of 2007/2008 have given to this years programme. But as with all academic calendars, as one year draws ever nearer a close, plans are already being put in place for next year. All LC1 and LCA1 students are invited to become Mentors and we look forward to working with them over the coming months.
